There are many important ways to volunteer for SandCastles. The following is a list of areas where we need your help. We also have many opportunities during the year that may require the need for help that does not fall into one of these categories. People are very unique, and everyone has special talents and abilities. The individual strengths of our volunteers bring a distinct quality to our program, as well as celebrating the individuals themselves. Please share your ideas and skills with us- it may bring support in an exceptional way to a child who is traveling on their grief journey. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer feel free to fill out our application below and send it in to us. Please note that you will also need to call and speak with a program coordinator prior to coming to an orientation or training. Program coordinators can be reached at 313-874-6881.
Opportunities on program night include facilitating groups for children, teens and adults who have experienced a death. Facilitators participate in the briefing/de-briefing sessions and assist with the set-up and tear down of their group’s room and volcano room. Programs run twice per month from 5:30 pm until 9:30 pm. Facilitators are asked to make a one-year commitment. Consistent attendance is important to ensure the development of the group as a cohesive unit. All facilitators are required to attend 4 days of training 18 hours total of training, as well as periodic in-services that are planned to meet the educational needs of our volunteers.
This is an opportunity to work closely with our office coordinator, and to help in many different areas. These include copying, faxing, filing, labeling and answering phones. Additional assistance would be needed with surveys, evaluations, the assembling of packets, organization of public education materials, data entry and making confirmation phone calls.
Work within a team to establish events that will help raise funds for the SandCastles program. Tasks encompass organizing the events, marketing, gathering supplies and community relations.
The program aide helps set-up dinner on program nights, greet families and cleanup. This is a key contribution on the night of program, and a great way to help if you are unable to commit to the full 4-hour time slot.
Volunteering for Camp Erin – Detroit is a rewarding way to contribute your time and support for the children if you are unable to make the one-year commitment to programs. Camp is held one weekend a year, usually in August. Areas of need are facilitators, helpers, check-in on Friday evening and the Sunday ceremony. Training is provided for those who wish to be a group facilitator or helper at camp.
The SandCastles staff is always in need of volunteers to help with speaking engagements. Community organizations frequently request speakers to present information about our program. If public speaking is something you enjoy, this would be a great opportunity for you.
